A Double-Edged Sword called IoT: A Written Report
The rapid advancement in
technology has introduced countless possibilities that has made our lives
easier. Among these developments, the Internet of Things is the main character
as it offers substantial benefits across various sectors of life. IoT
technologies are revolutionizing fields like engineering, agriculture, and
medicine by providing new ways to improve processes and services. However. This
development comes with challenges, such as the consumption of limited resources
and the environmental impact of the production processes. The future of IoT
looks promising with its dramatic rise in connected devices and significant
investment in the different sectors.
Despite
the dramatic rise of these technologies, this brought several critiques and
challenges that need careful considerations. One major concern is the fast
consumption of the raw materials required to produce an electronic device,
which some are already scarce. These devices are now becoming economically
accessible thus a potentially large number of populations could adopt to the
IoT technologies, leading to high production volumes, further straining on
limited resources. This overconsumption raises sustainability issues,
especially since the long-term effects of IoT have not yet given much attention.
Electronic
waste is another pressing issue that is expected to be a major problem with the
rise of IoT products. Recycling rates are inadequate, and there is an urgent
need for the improvement of e-waste managing system to handler large numbers of
discarded devices. The improper disposal of these e-devices possesses greater
risk to the environment, affecting the wildlife. Improving the recycling
process and securing a better practice for disposal is one of the crucial steps
in addressing this issue. Government and industries must collaborate and public
awareness about the importance of recycling would be the first step in
addressing this issue.
As
mentioned in the first part of this written report, IoT has made our lives much
easier as there are devices that can perform task of human. IoT has been
significantly useful in industries and business where
automation had reduced the need for human labor, leading to job losses. The
integration of IoT in various sectors can fasten operation and increase
efficiency, but it can also result in the displacement of workers, causing
economic challenges. These social implications must be carefully considered to
ensure that this implementation of IoT technologies does not negatively affect
the societal well-being of the individual. It is important to develop
strategies that balance technological advancements with job creation and
workforce development.
Minimizing
energy consumption in IoT devices is a critical target, as reducing the energy
supply will make these devices more efficient and sustainable. Strategies to
lower energy usage should be prioritized in the ongoing development of IoT
systems. This includes designing energy-efficient hardware, optimizing software
algorithms, and exploring alternative energy sources. Energy-saving techniques
such as low-power modes and smart energy management can significantly extend
the battery life of IoT devices, reducing the overall energy demand. Addressing
these issues and challenges is vital to ensuring that IoT technologies
contribute to a smart and sustainable future, benefiting society while
minimizing adverse effects on resources and the environment.
As IoT becomes accessible to most individuals, technology must evolve to meet new demands and challenges effectively. While IoT offers countless of benefits, addressing these issues and challenges are crucial for continuous responsible growth and sustainability. Careful consideration of resources consumption is a must, as well as on its environmental impact, social implications, and technological advancements for IoT to pave its ways to balanced and thoughtful integration in our lives. Governments, organizations, policymakers, and the consumers must work together to create a sustainable IoT landscape that supports innovation that safeguards the planets and its inhabitants. By taking proactive measure to address these challenges, we can harness the full potential of IoT and create a future that is sustainable and smart.
